IBJJF World Championship 2025 Results, Records Shattered And History Made

[s title=”Learn More……”][p]JUNE 1, 2025, LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA, USA, was the date and location set by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) for this year’s edition of its World Championship, the most consequential tournament in the Gi Jiu-Jitsu ruleset.

Despite a handful of important athletes missing from the line-up, names such as 2024 Grand Slam winner Mica Galvao or 2025 Pans champion Rerisson Gabriel, the Mundial did manage to gather the overall bulk of the best jiu-jitsu players currently active in the sport. The highly competitive divisions of the tournament managed to offer spectacular moments and one of the most fun tournaments to follow this year. Below are some of the key elements of what transpired this weekend on the mats, as well as the main match results.

Speaking of Grand Slam winners, among its many spotlight-worthy performances at the Mundial, there are certainly 3 names who need to be mentioned. Namely, those of Adam Wardzinski (Checkmat), Janaina Lebre (AOJ), and Diego “Pato” Oliveira (AOJ), all of whom conquered world titles this weekend while also achieving the Holy Grail of Gi jiu-jitsu: the IBJJF Grand Slam. Meaning, winning the European, Brazilian Nationals, Pans, and World Championship in one season. This is traditionally a very rare occasion in our sport, an honorary goal only reached by two male athletes, at this level, prior to 2025. By the end of his finals match, Poland’s Wardzinski let his belt rest on the mat as a sign of his retirement from the professional division. The final marked his 366th match in the adult black belt category.

A fair few names will be remembered after this World Championship, and without a doubt, Mia Funegra will be among them. The AOJ athlete received her black belt the day before the tournament from her coach, Guilherme Mendes, with the intent of breaking records and becoming the youngest-ever IBJJF black belt world champion in the 29-year history of the tournament. The mission of taking on the toughest light-featherweight division we’ve seen in a long time in her black belt debut, at the age of 18, was an audacious one. Still, she breezed through in like an experienced veteran with a dominant win over the former world champ Amanda Monteiro Canuto (12×0) in the very first round, then a bulldozer performance over Ann Wright (20×0), a submission against, arguably, the #2 featherweight in the world right now-Jessica Caroline- and a very tough final against Andressa Guirau. Stunning performance.

Also worthy of mention was the Phoenix-like performance of Roosevelt Sousa. The former Fight Sports representative returned to the gi last year at the IBJJF Crown after a lengthy hiatus from the grappling pijamas and has, since then, returned to this ruleset on a couple more occasions. Sousa put on some very fun performances this weekend, beating strong names such as Helder Tropeco, Luis Cantareira Oliveira, and last year’s world champ, Seif Houmine, on his way to a final clash with the talented Gutemberg Pereira. Sousa came out the victor, making this his first major title with the Gi at the adult black belt level. Not bad for a veteran with nearly 200 matches in the pro division.

The rookies were on fire at the Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu mats this weekend. After the aforementioned Mia Funegra, it was Jalen Fonacier, the Alliance Los Angeles representative has the nickname “The Future,” and who can argue with that, after these first few months at black belt? Fonacier started 2025 by placing second at the Euros, later he won the Pans, and this weekend he cemented his name as one of the best rookie years in the history of BJJ with a gold medal at the Mundial.

The Underdog Moment of the tournament was seeing #22 seed Joao “Bisnaga” Mendes take out the biggest names in the division to conquer his first gold medal at black belt in this tournament. Mendes has always been a very enjoyable athlete to follow, with excellent technique and gamesmanship, but had fallen short a fair few times. He came into Long Beach as the number 22 seed in the bracket thanks to a poor first-round loss at the Brazilian Nationals. One by one, Mendes was able to surpass his 5 opponents, leading to the epic match against the #1 featherweight in the world, Meyram Maquine. Bisnaga was able to nullify Mey’s powerful outside passing using the spider-guard and attacked when he could, a strategy that earned him the judges’ nod.

Black Belt World Finals Live Updates

Men’s Open Class

  • Unfortunately, Gutemberg is injured. Erich wins by default.

Women’s Open Class

  • Tayane Porfirio is now up against Gabi Pessanha. They had a crazy one earlier. Penalty each. No one wants to pull. Another penalty. Now a third. Six minutes remaining and they may face double DQ! In that case, Lis Clay and Ingridd Alves better get ready. Gabi finally pulls, Tayane back to her work on top with pressure. Gabi laces the squid, then wrestles up. She gets on top in turtle. That’s enough to score two. One minute remains. She finds the collar, gets the choke and tap. Gabi will get it done, she’s back to her double gold ways here in the podium.

Men’s Heavy

  • Adam Wardzinski vs Leo Ferreira. Leo pulls. He’s playing double lasso, trying to slow things down. Stall calls both ways. Now two. They give a third penalty to Leo, who has not done much and has locked things down with double sleeve. With a minute left, Leo wrestles up but Adam escapes. Adam up 2 with thirty seconds left. Leo pushes for something the final thirty seconds, but the first 9:30 of stalling was the issue. Adam takes off his belt and lays it down – the sign of a retirement. Thank you Adam Wardzinski for an incredible career.

Men’s Medium-Heavy

  • Gustavo Batista vs Jansen now. Rematch from last year where Batista broke Jansen’s foot. A pull from Gustavo and he’s into his single X – cranking on a foot but Jansen manages. Now he backsteps! Doesn’t pass but nearly an advantage. Now Batista into the legs again as he inverts but Jansen escapes. He nearly passes again! Batista turtles, Jansen hunting the back! He doesn’t get them but he’s up 3-0 on advantages as Batista escapes. Another choke attempt, another advantage. It will end with Jansen winning and the Pyramid going nuts for him.

Men’s Middle

  • Rolando Samson and Tainan Dalpra for middle gold. Tainan pulls. He sweeps up and Rolando accepts bottom and closed guard. Tainan catches a stall penalty but he’s working now from top as Rolando opens up more. A stack pass leads to side control for Tainan! He’s ahead 5-0 and sitting for the back. Rolando escapes. He’s trying to wrestle up from the half guard now.

Men’s Light

  • Andy Murasaki taking on Matheus Gabriel. Matheuswins the pull and comes up to score the first two points. Andy in single X, he rips on a toe hold and they stop it – they are looking at the reap for a DQ. No, they reset and continue. Another near foot lock and a near sweep net Andy two advantages, but he does have a penalty too. Andy finally wrestles up and gets his two, he leads with six minutes left. Matheus comes up to a knee as he plays guard. Andy pulls. They decide to give two to Matheus! Now it comes off. Now it’s back! It’ll stand, 4-2, 3 minutes left. Andy wrestles up from guard, Matheus is standing and defending. Andy will hold onto that leg but can’t convert – they spend two minutes in that position and Matheus will win.

Men’s Feather

  • Joao Mendes taking on defending champion Meyram. Last six years have had a new champion in this division, Meyram looking for the repeat. Bisnaga with the early pull and near sweep! Really good attempt, nets an advantage. Now Meyram pulls, he’s getting stacked and Mendes is working very well on top. Halfway in and Meyram has yet to get much off. Mendes with another near pass! They aren’t giving advantages but Mendes firmly in control and leading. They reset – 3 minutes left. Time ticking down, Mendes pulls. Meyram with a pass! Joao escapes with a stiff arm. Advantage only, tied up. Things will end there, decision time. Joao Mendes! He was really working through the match, not surprising. 7 years, 7 new champs.

Men’s Light-Feather

  • Double pull, Diogo comes up for the advantage. Pato working double lasso, now into the lapel with a spider hook. It’s patient passing work from Baby Shark, neither man can get much going. Three minutes remain. Pato into a lapel lasso, trying to invert. He’s into a squid guard. Shark pulls across to a leg drag but Pato moves to waiter and then inverts around but Shark centers up in closed guard. One minute left and Pato gets an advantage on an armlock. The fight will end, decision time for world gold… Diego Pato!

Men’s Rooster

  • Jalen Fonacier and Bebeto Oliveira now. Jalen catches the first pull and is up 2! They reset out of bounds and now Jalen pulls, he’s in guard – huge. They trade sweeps several times, Jalen also all over the ankle locks. Bebeto has two advantages so if he can tie, he will win. Short time, Jalen still ahead, he will win! 10-8!

Men’s Ultra-Heavy

  • Gutemberg is up now against Roosevelt in a battle of the big men. Close one here early, both playing a tight game. Gutemberg pulls closed guard. He’s opening now and looking for squid guard but Roosevelt passes and they go out of bounds – no points but an advantage. Roosevelt has a nice look at a crab ride but can’t convert to anything. It’s just a few minutes left and Roosevelt leads by two advantages. Two penalties gives Berg one advantage. Thirty seconds – Gutemberg comes up for a sweep! But Roosevelt sweeps right back. After a long review they decide they were only advantages both ways and Roosevelt will win!

Men’s Super-Heavy

  • We’ll have a few men’s finals out of order to accommodate the open class later. Erich up against Nolan Stuart. Double pull, Nolan comes up but Erich sweeps quickly. Erich disengaging well from the dangerous grips of Nolan’s guard. Erich has some grips on the pants, he throws that by and passes! Great timing. He’s in side control and racks up two more for knee on belly. Nolan manages to reguard. Erich plays the outside passing game for the final minute and his double gold run is still alive.

Women’s Super-Heavy

  • A major rematch here as Gabi Pessanha faces the woman who beat her in Brazil, Tayane Porfirio. Gabi pulls, Tayane working patiently from top. Slow, patient jiu-jitsu from both women. We have a near sweep but they go out and we need a reset. They take so long resetting and can’t decide on a position so they just restart on the feet. Gabi snaps Tayane down, Tayane rolls kneebar but ends up settling in a leg drag. Gabi up two advantages. Tayane in the last few seconds explodes up! She won’t score, Gabi scores her revenge but clearly Tayane is able to keep it close in a way no one else can right now. They face off again in the absolute.

Women’s Heavy

  • Yara Soares and Larissa Dias. Double pull, Yara comes up, she’s leading by advantage. Larissa sweeps her over and Yara accepts, now she’s in her open guard. Yara sweeps back to top, now Larissa lacing up a toe hold. She trails by an advantage. They give Larissa a penalty for an illegal grip. Yara is clear, score is now tied. Tied on advantages and points. Larissa knocks her down with the single X, gets the points to lead but Yara comes right back up and ties it. With short time left, Larissa wrestles her way up with the pants grips and puts Yara down. She will score and win late! Dramatic.

Women’s Medium-Heavy

  • Thamara Ferreira taking on Ingridd Alves here. Thamara Ferreira comes up from doble pull for an advantage. She works to a pass, gets close but only nets an advantage and Ingridd is into her x guard. Thamara keeps stepping around and putting pressure at different angles. She pummels into a leg drag. She won’t score but she will win! Back to back champ.

Women’s Middle

  • Thalyta Silva taking on Elisabeth Clay. Thalyta comes up out of the double pull. Lis working double sleeve open guard, then closes the guard. She throws the legs up but can’t capture anything. Feels like Lis is doing a lot but can’t score anything. Lis throws her legs up for a teepee choke, there’s a real bite on it but no advantage. Thalyta escapes. The match will end 1-0 on advantages from the double pull, Thalyta is the champion.

Women’s Light

  • Janaina takes the mat against Luiza, this is a top pound for pound kind of clash. Janaina pulls, playing lasso and trying to invert around. Janaina gets to the lapel for her open guard. Back into the closed guard. Both are playing super close, no one wants to make a mistake so not much action. Two stall calls both ways. 2 minutes left. Third penalty, we are resetting on the feet. Janaina pulls, she’s into her X guard. She comes up, thirty seconds. Sweep! She’s up – that’s it! Janaina Lebre does it she is World champion!

Women’s Feather

Women’s Light-Feather

  • Andressa Giurau is taking on the newest black belt at the tourament, Mia Funegra (promoted THURSDAY). Andressa comes up on a double pull. Mia working hard to invert around and under. She comes up on a back take attempt but falls off as Andressa stands. Even on advantages now. Mia working from the open guard now, she sits up and tries to snatch on the neck from a front headlock but can’t get it. They’ll reset. Mia pulls, she’s in closed guard. Penalties each for stalling. Another stalling and an armbar attempt net two advantages for Mia. Thirty seconds left, that’s it. Mia will get it done. Youngest world champion in history!

Men’s Black Belt Semifinals Updates

Ultra heavies are taking the mat for our last semifinals. Luis Cantereira is facing Roosevelt Sousa, not much happening to start as both pick up stalling penalties. Then another. Luis pulls, Sousa tries to pass but the reset standing. Again Luis pulls and Roosevelt gets to the back off a pass! He’s up by 4. He snatches the neck he’s into the finals! Huge performance by Roosevelt there. Last match of the day now, Pedro Lucas taking on Gutemberg Pereira. Berg playing from the open guard, trying to grab lapels but Lucas passes! Three minutes left. Lucas picks up a penalty as they reset for stalling. Another penalty… and a third… Lucas isn’t doing much and the judges are adding in more and more – and finally a fourth! They DQ Pedro Lucas for stalling and Gutemberg will advance. Crazy.

Erich Munis out now to face last year’s silver at heavy, Vinicius Liberati. Erich pulls, they trade sweeps and Erich is now on top and up 4-2. They reset, now Erich pulls again with a minute left. Nolan Stuart and Marcos Carrozzino are up. Nolan picks up an early penalty, but he’s got his guard to work from now. He throws up a triangle. Now onto the omoplata. This is deep but they end up out of bounds, not sure what the call will be. Looks like they give two and will keep going. Nolan pulls again. Marcos working his crazy dogs and outside passing but Nolan closes the guard. One minute. It’ll end like that, Nolan wins and will face Erich in the finals

Heavyweights are up. Adam is up first against Rider Zuchi. Adam pulls, and a few minutes in works his way to top with a butterfly sweep. Now it’s the knee cut – he’s so systematic. Pass, mount! Another pass, he is up 13-0 and Adam makes another World final. Pedro Machado up against Leo Ferreira. Both have had stellar seasons. Leo pulls. Machado working hard from top but Leo controlling sleeves from open guard. They trade sweeps and each have a penalty for passivity. Thirty seconds left, anyone’s match. Leo comes up, he wrestles Machado down! That’s enough for the advantage with seconds left. Leo makes the finals!

Gustavo Batista is here to take on Wallisson Sousa, Gustavo looking strong as he sweeps and takes the back. Wallisson is standing but Batista has the body triangle. He snatches the collar and gets the tap. Jansen also up against Raul Basilio, he uses an early snap down to spin to the back! He gets one hook but Raul does a good job turning back into him. Jansen passes though and he’s up 5-0. Jansen gets Raul to turn again, he’s in rear mount. Brutal. Now mount. Jansen will advance to a World finals rematch from last year.

Middleweight time. Yan Pica-Pau and Rolando Samson, couple veterans here. Tainan and Ronaldo Junior as well. Rolando comes up from the pull for an advantage, he is on top in a deep stack. Tainan on his mat pulls to closed guard. Not a ton happening in either yet. Rolando will ride out that advantage for the win, he makes his first world finals. Tainan finally comes up on a sweep. With thirty seconds left, Ronaldo attacks a leg lock but it’s a deep reap and a DQ.

Lightweights are up. Andy facing Leo Souza, he pulls to closed guard. Matheus Gabriel is up against Robinho, Matheus scores a quick two but Robinho wrestles right up – and they go out of bounds so only advantage. Andy also scores two on a sweep and they go out, he manages to pull again so he’s in great shape. Andy gets in a  single X, laces the toe hold, gets the tap! Oh no, they are reviewing for a DQ… but it stands as a submission. That would have been tragic. Andy advances. Robinho and Matheus still going, they sweep back and forth, Matheus up 4-2 and in his closed guard. Robinho opens the guard. The match will end, Gabriel back into the finals. Incredible.

Featherweight time, Cole Abate takes the mat against defending champion Meyram. Cole pulls, Meyram is blitzing him with passing early on. He racks up two advantages. Diego Sodre and Joao Bisnaga on the other mat. Bisnaga pulls, they exchange sweeps. Bisnaga locks on an ankle from De La Riva, he has a Terra lock – and Diego taps!!! Bisnaga to the finals! What a run from the 22 seed. Cole and Meyram still at it, Cole in his X guard. Cole picks up an advantage on a sub attempt. Meyram now stacking, he’s up 2-1 on advantages, points tied. Cole holding on barely with a foot on a belt. Finally he reguards and closes the guard. 40 seconds, Cole opens. Cole thorws on a triangle! Meyram stands out of it, now Cole on a leg. Kneebar attempt, but not enough for the advantage. Meyram will win but it couldn’t have been closer. Crazy.

Pato and Shoya, Baby Shark and Leo Mario in the light-feather semifinals. Pato sweeps early, but Shoya sweeps back, Pato forces his way back on top and is now applying a lot of pressure from the half guard. On the other mat, Baby Shark comes up on a double pull for an advantage but he is stuck in closed guard. Now Pato passes for his 3, he’s up 7-2 and Shoya reguards. Baby Shark into a deep stack against Mario. Pato will advance 7-2. Baby Shark has thirty seconds, he still leads by an advantage. That’s going to be enough to do it, Baby Shark will win it and we have another chapter to write in this great rivalry between Diogo and Diego.
